Embedded Architectural Design

Proper architectural design (hardware/software) creates flexibility at the right places, eases new feature design in the future, ensures backward and forward compatibility, and allows finding the optimal balance between complexity in various disciplines. When doing this early in the project, much time usually is saved during execution and afterward.
Usual areas of interest:

  • Requirements engineering, ensuring all aspects are covered: testing, producing, installation, commissioning, using, servicing, etc.
  • System partitioning: defining functional blocks, behaviors, interfaces, states, etc.
  • Define cross-discipline dependencies, e.g., between software and electronics, FPGA’s, mechanics, cloud servers, or other external devices
  • Define compatibility between old and future versions, and how to cope with them
  • Error handling and how to cope with erratic behavior
  • Pinpoint any special cases and define solutions
  • Bring people together, also across multiple disciplines

Embedded Architectural Engineering and Design

Analysis & Algorithm Design

Choosing proper algorithms is crucial for low design effort and high product performance.
Usually this involves investigation of known information, requirements, and architectural aspects like future compatibility.

There are many tools available for this, depending on the challenges. Examples are Anaconda / Python, Excel, simulators, Matlab, programs made for specific analysis, etc.

For Machine Learning (ML) we can work with Tensorflow, Scikit-learn, PyTorch, etc.

Analysis and Algrithm Design

Prototype Manufacturing

Prototype manufacturing completes the development with a first working prototype. It usually involves all the above development steps. Currently we can do the following:

  • PCB design/layout
  • Component ordering
  • Mounting:
    • Mounting of through-hole and SMD, with sizes from 0603 and higher (0402 on special request)
    • Typical chip packages are SO, TSOP, LQFP (QFN and BGA on request)
  • Make test plan + perform board testing
  • Design and print any 3D printable parts for the prototype
